Not trying to answer for crossride but active duty peace officers in most classifications carry concealed without a permit. They have something far better... their authority as peace officers, which also allows them to carry across state lines, which a California concealed carry permit (for those who actually live in a county where they are issued) does not allow you to do.

crossride, you're in law enforcement? If so, aren't you eligible to carry with a concealed weapons permit? WAS. I'm still in a related field, just not a sworn position anymore.

And I believe that once you are no longer in a sworn position, the magic wears off and you are no longer to be trusted with a concealed weapon.

Correct.. unless honorably retired and with the blessing of the CLEO of the agency you retired from.
When I left law enforcement and gave up my commission my authority to CCW went away.

Yeah, your magic lantern died or something. Isn't it amazing how just overnight you change so much that you can't be trusted with a concealed firearm?

I was okay with it at first to be suddenly untrustworthy since it was nice to have that burden lifted.

+1 to that. Call me crazy but I took my oath and my responsibility seriously and I found it a lot easier to relax without having that responsibility any longer.
Of course, since I was always tuned into "the gun culture" anyway, I understood how ridiculous it was that I was suddenly less trustworthy even before it happened. It is ridiculous, on face, but it is how it is.

my question was WHY does he carry?[/size] I don't know, because he can?! I'll have to ask him. He also used to fly with the Civil Air Patrol, and is heavily involved with the Marine Corp League. PLUS, he travels in his state in remote areas and does run across an occasional bear...

I don't know, because he can?! Lucky, lucky him..... spoken like a true elitist on your part. I can't carry legally, even though I am more than certainly qualified and want to be able to defend myself when my life takes me to potentially unpleasant places. Please explain to me the difference between your father and myself.

I don't know, because he can?! I really don't know WHY my dad carries other then what I'd posted, honest answer. Why the insult BD? If you notice I made a reference to his STATE, he doesn't live in CA anymore, maybe that's why he CAN carry. Why do you think I am suggesting he is more qualified? In fact, I've had nothing but respectful words for your supposed qualifications (don't REALLY know you). I wouldn't have a problem with highly trained, STABLE people carrying a concealed weapon as I've posted before, and I suppose that's because I grew up around it.
