okay, so yes i understand how the world oil market works and the speculation on oil futures and all that but i guess what really gets my goat is why the heck don't we drill for the oil we have right here?

Because it would upset the snail darter or something. Or the rich libs would have to see oil rigs off their beach front homes.

Because the solution is to ween ourselves off oil altogether. I know it sounds drastic but the technology IS here. Battery/fuel cell technology is now good enough that plug-in vehicles are within reach. We just need to fund it.
Unlike many liberals, I think a America should use nuclear energy. France has led the way in this regard and has shown it can be a safe, clean, and efficient source of energy. We should follow France's lead.

My gawd! I agree with you Saunterelle! We do need to get off oil, but that is 25 years down the pike. At least. We need to view use of petrolium as an interim now, and work on other sources. I'm more of a hydrogen car type myself. Electric just doesn't have the range or the quick fueling capacity for long or heavy haul.
I like the idea of nukes, have since they came out (well, not quite that long, but since I was old enough to know much about them). but you have a snowballs chance of getting them built thanks to the lack of scientific knowledge of most liberals/progressives. And their lack of willingness to read and believe hard science that shows it is safe. Most seem to view everything connected with nuclear energy as a weapon.
Coal is also a viable fuel for powerplants and factories. new technology has it burning pretty clean now.

holy cow! it's like the perfect storm. i, too, agree with saunterelle. at least on the nuclear part.
it would be nice to be able to plug in our cars but remember.....electricity doesn't just magically appear. it requires coal and lots of it. otherwise, we would need to have giant wind farms that would destroy the coveted views of vast expanses of nothing! god forbid the enviro-wackos allow a [gasp] nuke plant!

Good points. So, incredibly, we agree on something!

I think you are all wrong.
We should be funding genetic research to grow super large hamsters that will run on gigantic wheels to turn turbines to create power....
Sorry just felt like being contrary because I agree with all of you. However, I feel that private industry research would be more productive than continual earmarks of public funding. There's no guarantee that money goes to the right place.
Especially because government money always goes to the lowest bidders (see substandard equipment in the military for an example). Lowest bidder doesn't always mean lowest quality but more often than not it does.
Aside: I apologize if my examples are always military related, but its the area of government I'm closest to. I'd rather use examples that I know, than try to use too much conjecture.

So I don't have an economical vehicle. I paid $4.29 a gallon today up 10 cents from a couple of days ago. They say BBQ-ing will be expensive this summer.....eggs are on sale $2.49 a dozen (that's a bargain?)....
It looks like we will see many thin Americans soon, hopefully healthy.

i filled up my 30 gallon tank again today. the pumps at costco only give you $99.00 worth. that only gave me 25 1/4 gallons. i'm sure i could've squeezed in another 2 or 3 gals since i was pretty close to empty and that would've made my total about $105-110. i drive 60 miles round trip for work. those vespa scooters don't seem so silly anymore!
the sad thing is that while i was pumping my petrol i took notice of the tax on that gas. the fed gets 15.25 cents/gal, the state gets 18 cents/gal, and the local boys get 7.75% (about 28 cents/gal). that's 61 cents/gal just in taxes. yet congress is grilling oil execs over high gas prices. "big oil" explores, refines, and transports the product and gets about 8-10 cents/gal profit. much of which is reinvested. what the hell has congress, sacramento, or rohnert park done to deserve these ever increasing revenues from gas?

Just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
Thursday, I put 25.8 gallons (32 gallon tank) of #2 Diesel in my service truck (7.3L) at $4.99 9/10 for a total of $128.74.
We might have to start charging customers a surcharge based on distances we have to travel.
Wednesday, I was in West Sebastopol, Angwin, Yountville, and Mt. Veeder Rd off of Oakville/Trinity Rd.
Four service calls with one heck of a lot of driving between them.

Does anyone know who the investors are? They surely must be at the bottom of this!

I've solved my gasoline problem... While making a left hand turn at a very busy cross street, with no traffic light, I found a hole in traffic and stepped on the gas to get into the flow of traffic. As I was accelerating and turning left, all things looked fine, as I started to straighten the steering wheel to be on my way, Voila!!!, No steering. The steering locked up solid in the left hand turn and I was still turning left and accelerating right dead on to a head on crash as I couldnt steer. Luckily, He stopped, and I stopped, with much screeching of brakes. There was just this much space between us when we stopped. ><. I freed up the steering and got home and promptly called the "Polly Klass Foundation" and donated the Van to them.
My Son told me, about a week ago, that he didn't think I should be driving any more. He was right. At 85 years of age, it's time to take a taxi. I don't travel much anyway, just to stores, and the bank... Alt+Q, is the shortcut to the quick reply box.
