people are working harder? compared to what/whom?
there are less jobs? than when? we've enjoyed the lowest unemployment rates in years.
supply and demand have always driven prices. when there is low demand for a product dealers must lower prices to entice people to buy. when a product is in high demand they can charge what they want. look at the housing market for example.

So I don't have an economical vehicle. I paid $4.29 a gallon today up 10 cents from a couple of days ago. They say BBQ-ing will be expensive this summer.....eggs are on sale $2.49 a dozen (that's a bargain?).... It looks like we will see many thin Americans soon, hopefully healthy. I've been trying to leave my car in the driveway for two or three days a week and take public transportation to and from work. Between all the coal we have, the amount of oil available in Alaska and the intersection of Colorado, Wyoming and Utah, plus advances in nuclear technology, there is no reason for us not to take bold steps toward making our country energy-independent. Any efforts to conserve energy will benefit our pocketbooks but will just be offset by increased energy use in China and India, making it necessary to increase domestic supply to drive down prices.

We can plan for the future, but we cannot wave our renewable wands & make it so just 'cuz we want it to be so. There are no quick fixes. Besides, there is more than enough oil to see us through 'till then. Let's all take a Valium & a deep breath & drive a bit less. We'll be fine. Or, invest in well drilling with a company like Ridgewood Energy (see link I'd posted). Ask your local CFP...

Saintjoeeric, what a good surprise and it's about time!! I have noticed more people at bus stops and more riding bicycles in the morning on my way to work . Those on bikes are in business suits and most of them are males. I could only think that the wives are driving the children to daycare or more recently, school. I'm not convinced yet that China and/or India is to blame for our gas prices. China has more people on bikes or man-pulled buggies. India is too poor to have SUV's all over the country.

back on topic... we tease a certain guy at work because he drives a prius with a radar detector in the windshield. you gotta admit, that's funny. he tells me the other day that he truly believes oil companies have raised gas prices in an attempt to smite people for buying priuses. he was absolutely serious.

That's a great scrolling marquee, New Guy! There are a number of smiley and other emoticon websites out there; I mainly use www.bestsmileys.com. There's a bunch of 'em over there! And you don't have to spend any money on gasoline to use them (staying fully on topic here!).

1. create less demand (start riding your bike, mink) by using petroleum alternatives like nuclear 2. drill for our own (calif. coast, anwr, south dakota, etc.) 3. build more refineries 4. stop allowing fed, state, and local gov't to take the lion's share of the price for each gallon (currently about 68 cents/gallon in SoCo)
