Listened to his little talk with the lady on CBS. He likes the results of the surge. He said that. Admited that it is doing some good. Then he said that even knowing what he knows he would have still voted against it. Great, he likes what it does, but he does not support it. He wants it both ways. This is insanity. He must think the electorate is really stupid.

I think his point is that, while the surge has improved things, it would have been better to withdraw troops.

How would it have been better to have simply withdrawn?

Hand over control to the Iraqis and use our troops in Afghanistan where they are needed.

Hand over control to the Iraqis and use our troops in Afghanistan where they are needed. Again, Saunterelle, you're not paying attention. At the time the Surge was being debated in the Congress, the Iraqi Army was not ready to assume control of the country. Handing over control at that point in time would have resulted in a bloodbath that no party, even your own, would want to take credit for. As a result of the Surge, the Iraqi Army was given the breathing room to pull itself together. The Iraqi Parliament is getting closer to being a functioning body. Their elections this fall will tell. The Sunnis have been convinced that the terrorists are not their friends, and they have started to ally themselves with us against al Qaeda. The radical Shiites see themselves as marginalized in the coalition government and they have stopped shooting. It's really hard to ignore that much good news coming out of Iraq. How do you do it?

Saunterelle, do you only listen to airamerica reruns? Lordy, you are one big DNC talking point. All the stuff Gaff pointed out would not be happening without the surge that Barry doesn't support. So your boy Barry would throw all that away even though he likes the results. Insanity.

snip> (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama said Tuesday that he was pleased with the reduction of violence in Iraq since the deployment of more U.S. troops but added that it was a result of several factors, not just the "surge." www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/22/obama.mideast/index.html"I am pleased that as a consequence of great effort by our troops -- but also as a consequence of a shift in allegiances among the Sunni tribal leaders as well as the decision of the Sadr militias to stand down -- that we've seen a quelling of violence," he said. ___________________________________________________ Insane, no........different opinion, thank goodness!

Yeah, but the "shift in allegiances among the Sunni tribal leaders as well as the decision of the Sadr militias to stand down" would not have happened without it. It tipped the scales.

If Bush were to withdraw the troops from Iraq tomorrow, and there was an immediate escalation of violence and thousands of innocents civilians killed by insurgents, what would Mink and Saunterelle say?
If Obama wins the election and was to withdraw the troops from Iraq the day he took office, and there was an immediate escalation of violence and thousands of innocents civilians killed by insurgents, what would Mink and Saunterelle say?

They would of course appalud the thousands of deaths. What does it matter, just so long as we pull out no matter what. Mink, have you bothered to read any of what has been posted? It is a work in progress. The Iraqi army isn't quite ready to take the ball. And, as Bush, the generals, the Iraqis have been saying, the conditions on the ground will dictate when we pull out.
