As I posted over at the PeeDee amongst the racist ramblings, if Mrs. BigDog or I were exhibiting I would go to see our work on display. Otherwise, there is nothing there I care to see.
The fact that there are gangbangers doesn't much bother me. I am a lot bigger than any two of them put together and even though I am a couple years removed from active law enforcement a lot of people tell me is still look "cop" and project a good deal of intimidation. It works for most of them. The few hard core a-holes who might want to strap me on will be at it for a while.

nope. wouldn't dream of wasting my time or money on that dump. nothing there but overpriced deep-fried foods and $7 beers. entertainment isn't all that special, either.
i've found that the sonoma/marin fair in petaluma is usually a better bet.

Personally, I love the flowers, the fudge and last year I ate at Johnny Garlics. I don't even mind going to see the livestock, just to see the proud look on those kids' faces who have worked so hard. However, with gas and food prices the way they are now......I 'll wait. I did want to go see Three Dog Night though, "Joy to the World". I grew up with the Sonoma County Fair, have pictures since I was a kid through the years. Back then Mom & Dad could hit the destruction derby, leaving the kids, knowing that we'd be safe.....not so in this day. A thirteen year old gangbanger was stabbed last night at the fair. What is wrong with the world?

We would go to the Petaluma, and Santa Rosa Fair every year when I was growing up. We weren't afraid of people there and the only thing we ever heard from our parents was to beware of the "carnies" since they were shall we say, "different." At the Santa Rosa Fair we would always buy the Mackinac fudge, Ibletos' spaghetti and garlic bread, a giant turkey leg, and in the later years (and to this day) a funnel cake with raspberry sauce and powdered sugar. The fair was/is a great place to indulge in junk food, after all, a treat now and then can't hurt, right? I remember one year I was with my 13 year old friends at the Petaluma Fair by ourselves until it closed, and we would have a ride that would pick us at the gate after. I am not so sure I would be comfortable with that today. Sonoma County had it's problems way back when, but we didn't live in fear. We would leave our homes and cars unlocked, walked to school by ourselves, trusted and knew our neighbors, and while we were instructed to be cautious of strangers usually the person you'd meet on the street was a relative or friend of someone you, or your family knew. Times have changed, and obviously not for the better... BTW, (no rocks please) have any of you been to the Marin Fair? It is smaller, and no flower show, but it definitely feels safer with all of the basic elements of a fair. Every night fireworks are displayed around the man made lake (Civic Center/San Rafael) and they are synchronized with music, it is really beautiful. Anyone remember the fireworks at the Santa Rosa Fair every night?Marin Fair (It's over until next year): www.marinfair.org/

I've worked the Marin County Fair a time or two in my much younger days. In more recent years, whenever I am working late on fair nights I get a front row seat for the fireworks. Mrs. BigDog exhibited her first try at Hardanger embroidery at this year's Marin event and took a third place. She has exhibited crossstitch, food items and some of her hand sewn garments at Marin, Sonoma and Marin-Sonoma (aka Petaluma) and has won a bunch of prizes including several best in show awards.
The Marin Fair, even still, has it's share of cretins and goblins... some of them come over from Richmond and Vallejo just about every day.

TBD, avoiding "cretins and goblins" would be near impossible no matter where you went these days. You have to admit however the Marin CO fair has a smaller population of them.
The Santa Rosa fair was always my favorite, and I had entered some of my photos (amateur class) in the past, and it was fun to win a ribbon or two. I haven't had much opportunity to enter over the last few years, but maybe again in the future.

I love the fair. We go every year. Cheesy, predictable, familiar. As a boy in big Eastern cities, I dreamed of small town fairs & lifestyles. The Sonoma County Fair is all that. The Hall of Flowers; Mackinac Fudge; Cinnamon Buns; Clo; gadgets in Grace Pavillion; strolling w/friends & family; cows & sheep; splash dogs; little kids w/Mom & Dad. Wouldn't miss it for the world.

I like the harvest fair more since we're kind of gourmets and that's more of a gourmet type show.
Love the animals though.
