holy bat-shit, horseman! whatever will these ladies do if they have to cut back on ice cream and potato chips? this is a tragedy and the democrats in congress should take some immediate action. these folks should be sending thank you cards to all of us taxpayers who have allowed them to live such a liesurely lifestyle.

Personally, I would like to meet the person running this blog....and see some "real" stories of the people who survived the Enron crash......and then we can go from there

What does Enron have to do with this, Mink? I can't find any mention of it. How does it bear on this clan living in subsidized housing? How did Enron prevent the one from getting a high school diploma? OH! I know! Silly me. It was Bush who, 17 years ago, caused that car crash and ruined this family.

It doesn't subdjoe....calm down. What is the point in posting this story and how do you know it is a clan?
I bring up Enron because they truly are people who must have been middle class or higher.

Again, what has enron to do with it? Is there anything that says they had extensive investments in Enron? Or are you just throwing that out as a 'let;s blame everything on Bush or big business" statement? As You are so fond of saying, let's keep on topic. As for why I called them a clan, try these clips from the piece: "Nunez and most of her siblings and their spouses are unemployed and rely on government assistance and food stamps" and : "Most of their extended family lives in the same townhouse complex… " maybe the daughter can get a used bicycle to get to work. That town isn't all that big.

It is tempting to make insulting comments about this story I admit, but what would you do if you didn't have money to move to an area that one, had jobs available and two, you could easily walk to?
Once people are in the position of not having any "extra" resources to move forward it is close to impossible to rise above the financial hole they are in.
I have said before that in situations like this, and especially if children are involved in addition to welfare, and food stamps etc. it is worth the additional (temporary) costs to educate people, supply transportation, daycare and any other tools that will help those who want to help themselves to get off of the system. The catch would be that once they stop working, or going to school they are cut off from any further assistance.
If you all really stop and think before reacting you'd realize that IN SOME situations like this it would be almost impossible to reclaim your former livelihood without some help.

subdjoe, a bicycle in Ohio? What about the winters there can't see how that would work. Maybe use the bike in spring, summer, and fall, save up money to get the van fixed? That way they could drive in the winter. Sorry, this NPR piece strikes me as just another sop to the cult of victimhood. JMO wrote: "If you all really stop and think before reacting you'd realize that IN SOME situations like this it would be almost impossible to reclaim your former livelihood without some help. " I don;t think anyone is saying that people who are temporarily down on their luck shouldn't get a hand. But a woman who can't find some work in 17 years? There has got to be something she can do. Even if it is just stuffing envelopes at home. And, the daughter being told by her friends to have a kid so she can qualify for more money? Come on!
