Slowly, yet inexorably, Mayor Fenty and the ham fisted bureaucracy he sits at the top of, seems to be trying to torpedo most of the local firearms laws across the nation. While I am sure that isn't their intent they also are likely taking something of a calculated gamble.
I'd wager right now that the the following chronology kicks in...
-- The District Court will likely do what it did in the original Parker case that Heller came from and do a summary dismissal to leave the District's policies (which are pretty much in full contravention of both the letter and spirit of Heller ) in place.
-- The DC Circuit Court of Appeals will hear it, and would likely reverse the District Court.
-- Both sides will appeal to the Supreme Court.
That chronology likely takes at least two or three years to play out.
The gamble is betting on who gets elected president come November. There are expected to be two, if not three, vacancies on the Supreme Court over the next few years and there isn't a lot of doubt regarding the mindset of prospective justices that a President Obama might appoint. A ruling could easily issue leaving Heller alone, but judging D.C.'s backward and illogical regulations as "reasonable".
I guess now we'll see.
