his plan is: COMMUNISM! (a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state)
do you know who benefits from those "obscene profits" of the oil companies? teachers, policemen, firemen, you, me, anyone who has a pension or retirement plan that invests in those stocks. taking profits from the oil companies equates to taking pension money from the aforementioned groups. is that right? a retired teacher might get $1000 from obama now but he/she could lose thousands in the long run.
why are lefty politicians hung up on oil company profits anyway? they get about 7.8%. microsoft gets about 28%, hollywood gets untold profits. why aren't democrats trying to take their obscene profits?

Um, would it be because Microsoft supports leftist causes, as does much of Hollyweird? And, since they support leftist causes, mostly by pushing a socialist agenda rather than giving all their profits to the needy, their profits are not "obscene" but the just rewards of their labor?

The New Guy, the answer is simple, when you do not have a comprehensive energy you turn peoples attention away from that to a scapegoat, in this case, the oil companies.

I've been trying to be nice all along and just think of him as a socialist, but that C word really is somewhat closer to the mark as a descriptor for this latest wealth re-distribution scheme. No, most leftists don't know and they don't care. The oil companies are EEEEEEEEE-vil, don't you know? Even though government takes trillions in taxes from them already when the company's profits are measured in billions. Microsoft gets more than that. The dirty little secret of successful software companies is that they are cash cows. Microsoft has no debt of any kind, leases pretty much everything from office space to worker's laptops, gets to amortize their R&D costs out across 20 years and outsources their manufacturing and distribution to the point that they own no inventory to have to pay taxes on. Most all the successful large software companys follow the same basic model. |

oh, i forgot to mention who gets the lion's share of oil company profits: the gov't. fed, state, and local take a total of about .62 cents per gallon of gas here in cali-forny. the gov't does nothing to earn that .62 cents so it is 100% profit. why isn't that considered "obscene?"
