May he rest in peace. I would say thank you to him, but you probably won't believe it, so I'll say a nice prayer for him instead.

subdjoe, you are trying to use emotional leveling here, and sorry your example doesn't work, and of course Retired Army Col. Lewis L. Millett deserves the highest respect.

millett had his own office at the wolfhounds quad on schofield barracks as the honorary colonel. i had seen him there a few times. even though his uniform wearing days were long gone, millet continued to provide leadership to those of the 27th for many years. hell, he was the only living person i knew who had a street named after him. see herei did not hear of his passing until now (thanks joe). just as many others, true heroes like millett pass away without much fanfare or media coverage. we don't seem too concerned as americans about such things. we are far more interested in what oprah winfrey is doing, or who tiger woods is playing hide-the-sausage with, and who's doing what in hollywierd. the sheepdogs among us, however, do care about men of valor like millett - a combat veteran of 3 wars. a man who seemed to have been born with the warrior spirit in his bloodstream. a real american hero who we can look up to. he, and many others like him are the reason we enjoy freedom and democracy. i'm saddened to see another great one go on to march in God's formation but i'm also glad to have had him on our side.

She gives others opportunities they would not have had such as an education or health. See her Foundation and Network If she wasn't rich, how can she help others? Besides, she worked for every penny, but isn't greedy. She is intelligent and generous, thoughtful and caring yet never forgot where she came from which makes her humble. one of the few things i do like about liberals is that if you let them go long enough they will spurt out logical answers to their own complaints about the world. unfortunately, it usually requires a conservative to point it out for them in mink's quote she is absolutely right about oprah being able to help people BECAUSE she is rich. most rich philanthropist help others BECAUSE they are rich. how many cars do you suppose oprah would have given away had she been POOR? being rich is fine and dandy for liberals because, as mink points out, they ALL work hard to earn it. Conservative republicans, on the other hand, NEVER EVER EVER work for their money. they just scam the poor, right mink? also, i love the way mink insinuates that doing a one hour talk show is hard work. sure, there is the time it takes for hair and makeup, rehearsal, etc. but a show like hers can be done two or three a day and put away until air date. much like game show hosts, who tape 3 or 4 shows each on monday and tuesday, then enjoy the next 5 days off. i would like to ask mink if doing a one hour tv show is harder tahn working on an oil rig? or being a policeman or firefighter? why don't they get the type of money that oprah gets? shouldn't obama being helping her spread her wealth? jmo points out that oprah gave away 50.2 million last year. fabulous! based on her income last year of 385M that equates to about 12%. lots of people put that much in the collection plate on sundays. based on her net worth of 2.8B it only comes out to half of one percent. don't let the big numbers fool you. oprah is not as generous as you think.

TNG, how much do you think is left after taxes? It's the wealthy that HAVE to carry the rest isn't it?

TNG, how much do you think is left after taxes? It's the wealthy that HAVE to carry the rest isn't it? JMO, that top 5% that takes so much heat from the left (usually bashed as being stingey, eee-vvilll "pubbies") put about 40% to 50% of the money into the federal treasury each year. Whenever we hear about 'big oil' an people who are rich because of it, we get treated to names like Bush, or Cheney, but not, for some reason Al Gore (check his connection to Oxy Oil - and how he used his position as VP to get some very rich oil lands sold at cut rate prices to Oxy). When we hear about 'windfall profits taxes' we are regaled with tales of the 'obscene' 8% to 10% that 'big oil' makes, but nothing about the 20% to 50% that the movie industry makes. And Oprah? How much overhead does she have? Should she be hit with that windfall tax too? How about Soros? Hell, how about our own dear senators? OH, and I think New Guy was giving her after taxes income. Should she be taxed that proposed 90% that was suggested for 'big oil?' At least if she gets hit with a tax like that it won't get passed on in hikes on gasoline or petrolium products. People will just have to pay more for her magazine.

I think what separates Oprah from the top 2-5% of the "well-to-do", is her background. Unlike the majority, if not all those in the oil business, she wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth. She never forgot where she came from so her generosity is not only well received but appreciated.......all politics aside.

TNG, how much do you think is left after taxes? It's the wealthy that HAVE to carry the rest isn't it? again, an in-house lib proves my point. yes, the wealthy DO carry the vast majority of the tax burden. the wealthy also provide jobs. i don't have anything against harpo herself although i never really found her show to be of much interest. think of all the jobs she has created BECAUSE of her fame and wealth. imagine the hundreds of people who would be out of work if she retired tomorrow. because of her wealth, many families have been able to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. because of oil companies THOUSANDS of families have been able to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. but libs want to take that food away from families because it is provided with "evil oil" money. but somehow oprah money is so much more sacred. why???

TNG, since you referred to me as an "in house lib" I am not going to take anymore time to post on this subject since it will fall on, well, blind eyes in this case.
Stereotype me and I'm done!

And charity is only pure if you make sure to publicize it?
