last night as we were coming home from reno we had just started our trek across the "swamp" on 37 westbound. we started receiving text messages and phone calls from family and friends asking where we were. apparently, the word had spread quickly about this incident. since there were four of us, two parents and two kids, i can understand their concern.
family of four killed in crash
(hat tip to the PD for being on top of the story quickly. the marinj also had a blurb but that was it. i guess they don't work on sundays.
notice how i didn't call this and "accident." accidents happen due to unintended/unavoidable circumstances. crashes usually are the result of some idiot doing something that is likely to cause a crash.
we had to pass this horrific scene about 30 minutes after it ocurred. immediately, it was apparent to me how it happened. the positions of the vehicle told the story.
my wife suggested that somebody was trying to beat the red light and i said no way. from the sight of that mini-van it was obvious that whoever was travelling down lakevilly hwy had no intention of turning or even touching the brakes at that light.
i figured some a-hole was shitfaced or stoned out of his gourd and t-boned that van at very high speed. we still don't know if alcohol or drugs were involved but it seems i was right about the high speed part. it's amazing what damage even a mini cooper can do when going that fast.
anyway, a family of four needlessly lost their lives last night and four more were in critical condition. and, of course, the a-hole who caused it survived (although his outlook isn't so good).
i reminded my youngest, who will begin driving next year that accidents are rarely caused by you or me. it's the other guy you must watch out for. if there's one lesson i've learned since living in california (i know, it happens everywhere) is that just because the light turns green doesn't mean it's safe to go. almost daily i get the green light and some jackass trying to beat the red blows right through the intersection a full second or two after i've gotten the green.
the moral of the story? be careful on the road, pay attention, don't text, drink, talk on the phone, etc. while driving and cherish the ones you love because life is precious and in the blink of an eye it can be gone.
