A sad story with a sad ending. I am just glad the children are okay.

How much you want to bet that he files a claim of brutality and excessive force against the CHP? Cop should have shot the SOB.

It's interesting these times we live in.
When I was breaking in to law enforcement very few cars had cages. Most CHP unts still don't... simple matter of economics more than anything else. But when I was breaking in, if some suspect kicked a cop in the face while driving like that, he'd have needed to get a medical clearance before booking.
People fought us back then, there have always been those few who are that stupid. However, there was an understanding, generally, that if you were going to do something stupid like that, you were pretty likely going to take a schooling for it. Especially for a cheap shot. I had an old timer cheap shot me one night early in my career.... and the two of us had a good laugh about it later on after a couple of my partners got done with him. At the hospital. He respected us, he just liked to fight and understood that it came with a price.
We both learned lessons that night. The old timer learned that even though I was a rookie I wasn't going to take his abuse and that I'd get up and fight him if that's what I had to do. I learned to not let myself get distracted when handling a boozy old fighter like him.
But it seems the older I get, I see more and more people are being stupid. The difference is that these days there is no respect. Most people know that the even if the police have to come and get you, and they are bringing an ass kicking with them, that it isn't like the old days. So they just be stupid without any real concern.
And that's downright dangerous.

Yes, getting violent with the police is about as stupid as it gets. If you want to wear their ears out is one thing, but striking a police officer should come with a heavy price.
