Len, I agree that parents are failing their children, and MANY (not all) in society definitely have chosen a new car, fancier house, electronic devices over staying home for at least the first few years. Our priorities are completely screwed up. Now, I am not talking about people who really need to work to sustain a household, or single parents.
Where I completely disagree with you is the government isn't taking care of the children either. MANY children are left on their own without any supervision, and forget about after school activities and tutoring. Nope, those extras are for those that can afford it, as for the rest...

JMO, it isn't the job of the State (any level of government) to take care of the children. That is where we keep getting into trouble, we keep expecting the State to do more and more, giving it more power, and allow it to dictate to us how to live. That is backwards.

subdjoe, I am not implying that the state raise kids in massive homes and support all of their needs. I am trying to tell you and others that kids are in trouble, and their parents aren't there to help for many reasons and while it isn't our responsibility we all pay in the end for not getting involved. So many children need after school programs, mental health support, tutoring, etc.. Funding is cut everyday for educational programs, and the CA schools rating is 48th, personally I don't find that to be acceptable. When do we realize there is a problem, when we are 50th?

JMO, first lets get some fiscal responsibility in the schools. And go back to having them actually TEACH rather than being a center for social services. I was listening to the radio today and there is a school district somewhere in the bay area (missed where) that is thinking about consolidating some schools so they can close some down. People were raising hell because of the "services" that would not be there if the schools close. Now, maybe I'm old fashioned, but schools are in the business of TEACHING.
I don't remember which thread, but someone else posted the true numbers about spending in CA schools, and our ranking. Rather than being damn near last, we are about in the middle on both. It is time we took the schools back from the CTA special interests.
