Schwarzenegger mobilizes National Guard to border

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday mobilized members of the California National Guard as part of a federal effort to deter drug trafficking and illegal immigration along the border with Mexico.

His order supports President Barack Obama's plan to have 1,200 National Guard troops assist with federal border protection, customs and immigration agents.

The move comes amid a national debate over an Arizona law that directs police to conduct immigration checks when they are questioning people about possible legal violations. There must be a "reasonable suspicion" the person is in the country illegally.

Obama asked California to deploy 224 Guard members for as long as a year, but California National Guard spokesman Lt. Patrick Bagley said as many as 260 soldiers and airmen will head to the border by Oct. 1........

I'm thinking if Arizona gets tougher with border control CA may end up with even more people crossing the CA border. I am all for border control and I hope this just the beginning of more to come.

I think it is a good call too. If anything, it is a good start. So far, it only seems to cover Ca/Mexico border, but you're right JMO, the Ca border needs to be watched as well.

260 CANG troops is a pittance. The 1200 that Barack wants to deploy to the entire border is something of a joke.

Past practice for these troops has been in support and administrative roles assisting CBP agents in processing detainees and doing remote surveillance. The troops are not actively patrolling the border, and aren't armed to my understanding.

Sure, here's one.

This article reads like the troops were there to back up the Border Patrol, but the straight of things is buried below the fold.....

Only a few hundred Guardsmen are left on the border, most of them finishing up construction projects in Arizona and New Mexico.

The Guardsmen were sent in a support role, not to seize illegal immigrants and smugglers. They used helicopters and night-vision gear to watch for people trying to slip across the border, then told Border Patrol agents where to find them. They also built roads and fences.

And that was 6000 guardsmen from across the border states in that previous deployment. Barack wanting to send 1200 now is exposed as that much more of the bit of kabuki that it is.

TBD, it figures, smoke and mirrors again. Well, I guess it's better than care packages and first-aid kits being delivered to the drug smugglers and "illegals," which wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Next presidential election I would wager a republican will be voted into office, what do you think?

What does that make now...10? There are other States Attorneys General that want to join, but some require permission from their Governor and some of those are Democrat.

It's "interesting", but frustrating to see the double standard by this Administration...go after states that are fed up waiting for the Feds to do their job and deal with illegal immigration, but ignore (actually encourage) "Sanctuary Cities". That alone tells us the Feds won't do anything to "fix" the problem.

The Dems want all the illegals that are already here to quickly get "legal" so they can be registered as Democrat voters, and the Republicans want to keep cheap/slave labor.

A pox on both their houses!
