So, we must ask, what has changed between when CA was consistently in the top 5 or 10 and now. The first thing that comes to mind is the huge number of students who must have the classes in a language other than English.

Yes, that's true. AND, parents aren't participating as much as they need to be either in my opinion! The bar has been lowered and because it's easier to meet SOME parents are more than happy to accept less than acceptable for their children. After all, raising the bar means the parent will have to do more!

JMO, you make some good points: the explosion of ESL students and the detachment of parents from the educational process. However, the focus of the PeeDee article was the spending cuts that schools have experienced. it seemed to me that the reporter was trying to create a direct link between the level of spending on education and the achievement of students. It was extremely suspicious that this article comes out now, at the start of the new school year.

jgaffney, maybe, but the STAR results are posted every year, and the Marin IJ posted theirs the same day. The future of our education system is downright scary, especially in CA!

Back to my old mantra - get the schools back into teaching. They shouldn't be social service centers. And get rid of the all the diversity and cultural sensitivity classes. All they do is push division, racism, and sexism.
