April 08, 2011, 11:04 PM When the City Council of Oakland says NO to a tax increase, you know that the wall has been hit. "Public services in Oakland could be hit with even deeper cuts than previously expected now that three members of the City Council have blocked Mayor Jean Quan's plan to put an $80 parcel tax before the voters. Oakland faces a $46 million budget deficit next fiscal year (along with a $6.5 million shortfall for this one), and Quan had hoped to provide $11 million to $15 million towards closing that gap. Even before the council's action, Quan was already proposing $20 million to $25 million in service cuts (specific cuts were to be proposed by department heads by this Friday), along with $10 million to $15 million in concessions from public employee unions. On Monday, hundreds of unionists booed Quan at a "unity" rally when she told workers, “We will have layoffs." Oakland has a deficit of over $50 million--that is after years of Jerry Brown and Ron Dellums serving as Mayors--they bankrupted this city. Dellums, a well known out spoken socialist, could not even run for re-election. Brown never mentioned how he ran Oakland into the ground during his race for Governor. Finally, Oakland has to operate legitimately--and that means lots of firings (they have already fired 70 cops and about to fire 50-60 more). Too little, too late. The pension contributions will in 2-3 years--or less, force Oakland into bankruptcy--the legacy of radical union politics. That you Jerry and Ron. www.capoliticalnews.com/blog_post/show/8235
