Soon she will be forced to survive on pizza crusts scrounged from dumpsters.
Evans lashes out at decision on taxpayer-funded car
The lady makes over $100,000 per annum. PLUS gets top notch health care for herself and her family paid by the State of California (us), AND she gets to keep that when she is out of office.
Poor, poor, POOR Noreen.
If it's such a hardship for her maybe she should quit.
Evans lashes out at decision on taxpayer-funded car
State Sen. Noreen Evans suggested today she may soon have to resort to using hot air balloons, llamas and other unconventional forms of transportation to travel across her sprawling North Coast district following a state commission’s decision to take away her taxpayer-funded car.
In a series of eight seemingly sarcastic tweets posted this morning, the Santa Rosa Democrat told followers the state could no longer afford to send her to meet with constituents in Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake and Napa counties.
Last week, the Citizens Compensation Commission tossed out old rules that compensated lawmakers for gasoline, insurance and repairs. Instead, lawmakers who drive their own vehicles will get a flat $300 a month. Evans, who estimates she drives 2,000 miles a month to meet constituents, said the sum equates to about 15 cents per mile for her and other rural lawmakers who drive similar distances – far less than the 51 cents per mile paid to members of the compensation commission and other state workers.
Evans could not be reached for immediate comment today. Her tweets, abbreviated heavily by Evans to conform with Twitter’s 140-character limit, have been edited below for clarity:
“Hey Press Democrat! Going to Vallejo today to meet with Chamber. Was there yesterday too. Big meeting in Napa Thursday. 280 miles roundtrip. How should I get there?”
“Used allowance driving to and from Capitol, Sebastopol, Vallejo and Napa. Sorry Mendocino, state can’t afford your rep to tour tsunami damage at Noyo Harbor.”
“Another incident at Napa State Hospital? Sorry workers, state can’t afford to send your elected reps to meet with you and see state facility. Maybe Press Democrat can go instead.”
“Sorry Humboldt. State can’t afford to send your elected reps to meet with students and faculty re impacts of budget cuts. Send the university down here.”
“What’s that Lake County? Flood damage? Sorry, state can’t afford to send your elected reps to see the damage. Send pictures.”
“Napa has hot air balloons. Maybe they can send one over to take me to Thursday’s meeting!”
“There’s a llama farm in Mendocino County. Send ‘em down! I need to go up there for 4th of July. Let’s get packing!”
“Lake County has a buffalo ranch. Send ‘em down! Need to get on the road if you want your senator to see the new community college campus!”
Evans’ tweets on the mileage issue over the last week have drawn responses from critics on Twitter. A sampling, edited to remove abbreviations for clarity:
“You’re finally getting it. California can’t afford it. Use the phone. As long as we have your ear, we’ll live with not shaking your hand,” tweeted Gerry Blue, a Sonoma County resident.
“Dear Sen. Evans, if the $300 a month car allowance isn’t enough, I suggest buying a bus pass, car pooling or tapping voters for rides,” tweeted Carmen Gonzalez, who identifies herself as a Southern California resident. “If your district is too large to handle by commute, surely Gov. Brown can assist in re-apportioning your district to be smaller.”
“You know, public service is what you signed up for. We’re all suffering in this economy! Stop whining. Seriously!” tweeted Kai Tiura, a Sonoma County resident.
Supporters have also used Twitter to back the North Coast lawmaker.
“For the Press Democrat it’s about getting the haters on Watch Sonoma Crazy to froth at the mouth. Next to Unions and Immigrants you are the best target,” tweeted Lisa Maldonado, executive director of the North Bay Labor Council.
“The Commission’s action was punitive, not based on facts nor logic,” tweeted Steven Maviglio, a Democratic strategist in Sacramento.
