I have come to find out that our local schools in Petaluma, Kenilworth and Casa Grande, have both changed their commencement times to hours that make it a burden on working parents to attend.
Kenilworth is now held at 9 am, it was in the evening when I went to school their in the early seventies when both parents were just beginning to be forced into working. Both my parents were able to attend without losing any work time. Now they take it for granted that I should just take time off, and not question why I should have too. And, no one knows who is responsible for the decision. Last year was the first year it was held at this hour.
Casa is just as bad, moved up from 6:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The person in the office claimed it had always been that time. I asked her if she wanted to bet on that and she said, "sure." When I asked how much, she back peddled faster then a swimmer in the face of a shark, saying for the last five years. She would have lost, I still have my announcements and the time was 6:30 pm.
No one wants to own up to the responsibility of screwing the parent in this one. But that is exactly what is happening. We, the working parent, who pay all their salaries through exorbitant taxes, are being forgotten in the one moment that we work our whole lives for, our kids moving up and on.
This really chaps my hide. And the pathetic answers I get when I call, makes me wonder if all those administrative costs are worth the price. They certainly have no answers, and talk like we as parents do not deserve any.
