The Obama camp is incensed because Gov. Sarah Palin has rightly pointed out his association with William Ayers. This is from Reuters:
This reaction was predicted accurately in Jerome Coursi's book, Obama Nation. Dr. Coursi predicted that, as soon as the Republican machine started to bring up issues that were largely ignored during the Democrat primaries, it would be labelled as "smear tactics" and "Swift boating" by the Obama campaign.

It's not really important that William Ayers is an unrepentant terrorist who not only bombed the Pentagon almost 40 years ago, but also claimed that he was sorry that he didn't do more. The important point is that Ayers is a radical educational figure in Chicago, the originator of the Annenberg Challenge, something that has been actively supressed by the Obama campaign. Ayers is much more than just a guy in Obama's neighborhood, easily dismissed with the comment that "our kids went to school together." You will note that Ayers kids are in their 30s and Obama's kids are pre-teen. Who's a liar?
Obama served on the board of the Annenberg Challenge with Ayers, but was not selected randomly for the post. Ayers was the mentor of the board and served on the selection committee that picked Obama. It was no mistake that the two were on the board together. Who's a liar?
I'm at work right now and I don't have the book with me, which I just finished this weekend, but I will post more backup tonight, after Saunterelle weighs in with the MoveOn-DailyKos-HuffPost line.
Democrat Barack Obama counterattacked on Sunday against a new Republican tactic by saying rival John McCain was more interested in a smear campaign than fixing the U.S. economy.
The Obama campaign unveiled an ad hitting McCain as one of the "Keating Five" senators who met federal regulators on behalf of a California savings and loan institution that collapsed in 1989. The ad faults McCain as unwilling to regulate the financial industry.

Isn't it interesting to note the immediate use of the term "Swift Boating" by the Obama campaign. I think that is progressive code for "It's all a lie because they hate us almost as much as we hate them." But, the student of history will recall that, during the Kerry campaign, where the term first originated, the facts of the book Unfit For Command were never refuted by the Left, just the tactic of releasing it during the general election campaign. Dirty politics, indeed. But Gwen Ifill's book coming out, lauding Obama for breaking the "black" ceiling, is not?
