Found this piece of gossip at Datalounge
-------------------------------------
I work for The Times (15 years) and know the family very well.
The problem we are facing is, in part, one that all newspapers are dealing with. The ad revenue generated from internet operations is insufficient to cover the loss of print revenues. Because we still derive the majority of our profits from print, we cannot shutdown or remove enough cost associated with production & distribution of a newspaper to meet the lower revenue stream. The fixed costs of printing are extremely high and burn a lot of cash flow.
However, it is true that Arthur Jr. is not well-suited to run the business and has made some extremely poor decisions over the years. His cousin, Michael Golden, is a bit more business-savvy, but that's not saying much. The family is really not equipped to deal with the decline in the business and are resisting change.
The Sulzbergers control The Company through their Class B shares, which have the power to elect 70% of the Board. The publicly traded Class A shares have limited rights and cannot elect more than 30% of the Board. This mechanism ensures the family always remains in control.
The management team at The Times, inevitably, tends to consist of long-time veterans who worked their way up. While most are very smart and certainly dedicated, they are not talented enough to think outside the box or push the family.
Sadly, this year could be the last (if we're lucky) of family reign. The cash flow problems are not going to get better and the family will have no choice but to sell.

It amazes me that you don't mind having the mainstream American media so concentrated in the hands of just a few.

The Mainstream Media is already in the hands of a few. Liberals. Only Fox & Talk Radio are acting as balance, and they are thriving; both in listener/viewer numbers and revenues. Why are the vast majority of liberal media outlets failing to operate in the black? Bad businessmen? Bad product? Or are regular folks just too darned stupid to buy their news?

CNN, CBS, ABC, NBC are all squarely in the middle. The only left-leaning cable news channel is MSNBC which acts as the counterpoint to FOX. I guess it's easy to keep your head in the sand when you can tune into a biased news source and keep balanced reporting from entering the picture. It's just sad for some of us who prefer to know the TRUTH from objective news sources.

CNN in the middle? That is a stretch.

CNN is squarely in the middle. Who there is liberal? Wolf Blitzer? Anderson Cooper?

CNN is squarely in the middle. Who there is liberal? Wolf Blitzer? Anderson Cooper? Cooper is in my opinion a flaming liberal. CNN in my opinion is currently moderate-left (it use to be far left). MSNBC now falls in the far-left category. I don't expect extreme lefties to understand. Probably any media that isn't flaming left seems center, or right to a radical lefty.

hmmm... I respectfully disagree. His coverage of McCain/Palin was extremely fair and balanced.
I agree about MSNBC. They are the Fox News of the Left.
