While the Democrats would like you to believe that they are all about clean, renewable energy, the reality is that they oppose anything that encroaches on their space.
Case #1: The Bureau of Land Management is trying to lease out some land in eastern Utah for natural gas and mineral exploration. After an initial burst of (knee-jerk?) opposition to the locations of the leases, BLM cut back the lease areas in half. BLM has a good fact sheet on the leases here.
However, none other than Robert Redford, the darling of the environmental movement, opposes the leases because they encroach on his space. Calling Bush "morally criminal", "devious and sneaky," Redford opposes the leases because he happens to like driving through that area of Utah.
Case #2: SDG&E would like to build a solar energy farm in the Imperial desert, east of San Diego. Is that clean energy, or what? However, the area is remote and requires a new transmission line to deliver the electricity to the users in the San Diego area. Environmentalists favor the solar energy but oppose the new transmission line, claiming that it would be an eyesore on a wilderness area, and could be used to transport "dirty" electricity generated in coal-burning plants in New Mexico and Mexico. Truth be told, the transmission line would run near their property and they don't want to look at it.
It must be a great time to be a Democrat environmentalist. You can favor alternative energy sources, especially wind, solar and tidal, because you know that they will never actually be built as long as we still have the Sierra Club, the Natural Resouces Defense Council, the Center for Biological Diversity, etc. You can say, with a straight face, "I'm all in favor of alternative energy, just not here."
