Maybe Ellis Island, and the San Francisco version of it should reopen. And impose the same standards that my grandparents had to meet.

I agree Subdjoe. The country has way too much money in
translation materials alone. Make them assimilate or suffer! Honestly, the country should get the jobs back that were outsourced.
Psst, TNG, please don't remind me of the PD new forum.....I'm having fun!

Well, so far we all agree on this issue. I guess until we get some new members this thread is moot....
Legal immigration= Good
Illegal Immigration= Bad
Why? Because it's ILLEGAL. I'm done.

I agree with you all on this one. When illegal immigrants cross the boarder they cut in line ahead of legal immigrants who have often been waiting for many years to come here. Also, I would rather have educated immigrants coming here than manual laborers. It should be a controlled process.
What I don't like is all the verbal bashing of Mexican culture. It is a wonderful culture with great people, food, art and music. Why some here feel the need to make fun of certain aspects of their culture is beyond me and only reflects ignorance. If America is supposed to be a great melting pot we need to be more tolerant of the culture of others.

Yeah, all the hate-mongering going on both sides in the PD forum is out of control.
It makes me happy that TNG set this place up. Still miss the old forum, though.
As far as Mexican Culture... Totally agree. At the risk of sounding ignorant, I practically flipped out when I found a Taqueria here in NOLA. I eat there once a week, now. I love Mexican food.
Further, when I was working construction, the guys I worked with were primarily Mexican immigrants. They were all really awesome. Don't know their exact status, but I know my boss wasn't hiring anyone without documentation.

The day of the humble immigrant may be lost forever.

Nothing to see here, move along... Sorry, but when we all agree, it makes for a less then interesting topic. Oh well, perhaps we should start our own party and get some people on the ballot...

We all agree that illegal immigration is harming our country. Their first act in this country is to break our laws. What kind of example is that to set for thier children, and believe me they are having lots of children once they get here. With a porous border, we allow people to enter this country that we don't know anything about. The sick, mentally ill, criminal, and even terrorist is able to pass through our borders They dilute our work pool by flooding the market with unskilled, uneducated workers. We have three candidates running for president, all with weak immigration stances. Sen. Obama receives a voting rate of D- on Immigration. grades.betterimmigration.com/testgrades.php3?District=IL&VIPID=1162Sen. Clinton receives a voting rate of D- on Immigration. grades.betterimmigration.com/compare.php3?District=NY&Category=0&Status=Career&VIPID=896Sen. McCain receives a voting rate of D on Immigration. grades.betterimmigration.com/compare.php3?District=AZ&Category=0&Status=Career&VIPID=33Our very own Sen. Boxer (C-) and Sen. Feinstein (C) receives better grades than the three people running for President. Expect more Sanctuary cities, less immigration raids, less Deportations, and less legislation to curb the giveaways that are drawing these people into our country like a giant magnet. We can expect little help from our elected officials and only hindrance from our courts in trying to deal with this overwhelming problem.

If America is supposed to be a great melting pot we need to be more tolerant of the culture of others. Though I agree that bashing people just for race is beyond reason. Noticing that young men and women from that very same culture represent more then 90% of the gang population is not racist. These gangs are the greatest source of our crime and the stigma they cast upon their own culture is what is causing most of the racist backlash toward their people. It is something that needs to be dealt with, starting at home.

Yes, gangs are a problem in our state. But gang members are usually not illegal immigrants. They are often the children or grandchildren of illegal immigrants. Born here, they are LEGAL here in America.
They choose gang membership due to the lack of a culture for them to identify with. Their parents came here to work hard but they do not grow up with the same ethic. They turn into cholos and gangs give them something to identify with.
Social programs do work to offer an alternative. Mentor programs and after school programs are a couple of examples. It is something we as Californians must address because they are LEGAL residents of our state. Painting illegal immigrants as gang members only continues the fear mongering that the Right seems to be so fond of.
Many young Black people in America are also involved in gangs. Is it a part of their "culture?" No, because their culture is American, right? Neo-Nazi gangs recruit poor white youth. Does this mean it's a part of their "culture?" No, it is a structural problem in America that affects our poor and disadvantaged.
Remember when Obama made the comment that people in rural Pennsylvania are bitter so they cling to their guns, religion, and blame their problems on illegals? The same can be said of many people here in California. Blaming illegals for our problems is an easy scapegoat. Yes, our border needs to be more secure but continuing to harp on immigrants and painting Mexicans with a broad brush accomplishes nothing. Grow up.
