Yes, gangs are a problem in our state. But gang members are usually not illegal immigrants. They are often the children or grandchildren of illegal immigrants. Born here, they are LEGAL here in America.
Legal or not, they cause the greatest backlash against their own people, regardless of immigration status. It is because of this people seize on racism and associate it with other issues. The gangs fester and grow because we import dirt-poor people, adding to our own poverty level through immigration and illegal immigration. How smart is that?
Now you have kids of third world status growing up with people who are part of the American culture and are products of generations of hard work. These poor kids see the things these other kids get from their parents, and think they should have them too. So, they turn gangs and crime, because their parents have to work two or three jobs just to afford food, room and board.
They choose gang membership due to the lack of a culture for them to identify with. Their parents came here to work hard but they do not grow up with the same ethic. They turn into cholos and gangs give them something to identify with.
It has nothing to do with a lack of culture, and more to do with a clash of culture and prosperity through family sacrifice. The kids of third world poor people want to make the leap to what took generations for others to achieve here. And, we import the problem.
Social programs do work to offer an alternative. Mentor programs and after school programs are a couple of examples. It is something we as Californians must address because they are LEGAL residents of our state. Painting illegal immigrants as gang members only continues the fear mongering that the Right seems to be so fond of.
Really, then why is the problem growing faster then it can be mitigated? I will tell you why, because those programs are band-aids on an arterial laceration.
Regardless of their immigration status, they are the roots of the racism that is directed at their people. Ignoring that fact, and saying we need to address the issues from that stand point is foolish.
And, insulting my political stance certainly will not endear me to your point of view, because it is wrong. This county is not made up of people from the right or left, it is made up of people who see this as a real problem. The simple fact is that Latino or Hispanic gangs are made up of a large number of illegal immigrants, or do you not read the news? You are politicizing the issue, and that is plain wrong and dangerous.
Many young Black people in America are also involved in gangs. Is it a part of their "culture?" No, because their culture is American, right? Neo-Nazi gangs recruit poor white youth. Does this mean it's a part of their "culture?" No, it is a structural problem in America that affects our poor and disadvantaged.
Did you know that less then five percent of the gang population in this county is related to a White Pride style gang? Asian gangs, though in the news, still are less then 10% of all the gang populations. Black gangs are also very low in this county. I am not sure of the state wide numbers, but I am sure that Latino/Hispanic gangs far out number them. And, Latino/Hispanic gangs are the only ones in this country that have embarked on a campaign of genocide, killing over race only.
Remember when Obama made the comment that people in rural Pennsylvania are bitter so they cling to their guns, religion, and blame their problems on illegals? The same can be said of many people here in California. Blaming illegals for our problems is an easy scapegoat. Yes, our border needs to be more secure but continuing to harp on immigrants and painting Mexicans with a broad brush accomplishes nothing. Grow up.
Obama is a fool. He does not know what side his bread is buttered on. With over 12 million illegal immigrants in this country, at about 90% Hispanic, what kind of brush do you expect people to paint with?
We import the poorest, artificially lowering our poverty level to reflect that of the third worlds poorest immigrants, and causing severe problems in our society. People in this country never used to be afraid of hard work, but big Agri-business wants the cheapest labor they can get, and now you have a solution that does not work. And it makes it more difficult to bite the bullet when we have too.
