Federal Patronage is what caused the migration of Blacks from one party to the other, voting against their own long term interests in order to get federal dollars for Black causes. Which makes no sense when you consider they support the party that has actually done the least for their cause. But, money now talks louder then your future earning power.
I have to enter this discussion to disagree with you here. The Democrats do much more to help black people than Republicans do. Lets not fool ourselves, much of America's poor are black. Democrat is the party of social services: like job skills training, mental health services, homeless shelters, welfare, etc. They are programs designed to help people (who are down and out) get back on their feet and make something of their lives. The Republican model leaves these people without skills, on the streets to fend for themselves. You're fooling yourself if you think that Republicans have black people's long term interests in mind. That is why blacks vote overwhelmingly Democrat.
Too bad your ignorance is showing, because even after all of these programs were enacted by the FDR administration, and that is their origin, Blacks did not benefit economically or socially. These very programs you speak of did nothing to help.
Were you aware that after the very first minimum wage law was enacted that unemployment went up? Were you also aware that after every single minimum wage increase that unemployment increased for uneducated poor Blacks, the very people you claim your party tries to help. It currenlty stands in the neighborhood of 30% unemployment for poor blacks. Your Democrat policies are doing an excellent job lifting them up, aren't they.
Now let's look at welfare. It was not until TANF that the rate of Blacks on welfare began to drop. Guess what, TANF is not a Democrat creation, it is a Republican creation, implemented during the Contract with America by a Republican controlled congress. TANF, and the programs designed to work with it, have helped to remove people from the public doles and put them to work. Thanks to Republicans. I know this is true, because I am one of the people involved in getting people back to work.
If Democrats were truly so concerned with the Mental Health System, why have they let it languish? I am not down on either party for it, because they have both attempted to repair the system in the past. However, people like you are incorrect on the subject, which I have looked into at some length. You tend to blame Reagan when it was the courts that failed us. Also, Reagan was only governor for one Mental Health Bill that was created by the previous administration under Edmond G. Brown and passed by the California Legislature before Reagan took office. He could have vetoed it, but it was a bipartisan bill, so he signed it. But the uniformed like you, who go off half cocked, are ignorant of history, so you make the same mistakes over and over.
Republicans have the peoples long term interests at heart. It has been proven throughout history, your party has not proven it. Notice how many tax cheats, illegal alien hiring democrats have surfaced lately? The Republican Party has stated principles, the Democrat Party does not, makes it easy to change your mind when principles would get in the way.
Lastly, you know nothing of Federal Patronage, that is obvious. The Black vote has been purchased lock, stock and barrell with Federal Tax dollars. It is that simple. Even prominent, self respecting blacks are coming to realize this. Just why in the hell do you think a Website promoting the National Black Republican Association exists?

Guess what, we're not living in the past. This is 2009, not pre-1968. True, if we were living pre-1968, my party affiliation might be different, but that is irrelevant. Black people see that voting Democrat benefits them today and in the future, that's why we are called "progressives," we're not stuck in the past.
You are correct, we are living in the now. However, those who do not know the past are condemned to repeat it. You are a perfect example of that, as is Obama. Your party affiliation is relevant, because you belong to the true party of greed and corruption. Blagogate is no accident or uncommon happening. All these tax dodgers and illegal alien nanny hiring people are Democrats. Yours is the party of divide and conqure. Yours is the party of socialism. Yours is the party of no more America. Yours is the party where the leaders believe they are above the People and the Law.
