This is a simulation of air traffic over a 24 hour period.
I confess, as I get older I am getting even more FEARFUL of flying, and the Hudson River episode reminds of the bird/engine failure danger etc. And, yes, I do know driving is much more dangerous, but...

I have to admit I have never flown and declined trips to Hawaii because I didn't want to fly......just looking at the action, can you imagine what it took to stop all air traffic on 9/11?? Yikes

Loved flying as a kid as it always meant vacation! Hate the hassle now that I'm grown and have to admit that flying with my kids makes me a bit tense. Not that they're not well behaved, but from the danger point of view. yes, I know driving is more dangerous, but I feel like I have more control behind the wheel.

I don't know why we have a false sense of safety on HWY-101, it is a very scary place to be on most days. I too feel a sense of control while driving, good driver and all of that, BUT I was rear ended years ago, my car totaled, and I saw it coming and couldn't do a thing about it. I think in my mind if a car breaks down you pull to the side of the road, if a plane has mechanical trouble you're damn lucky to be in the Hudson River at best and that's unsettling! 9/11 didn't make it easier to feel safe in the sky either, I know it increased my fears. I still fly, begrudgingly!

I'll be in Florida next week.
Still not a fan of flying though.
I enjoy the destination, just not the actual trip.
I wish it was possible to just teleport to a destination or something. Being confined in a plane for 10 hours -- in the cases of connection flights -- to me is hard on my nerves.
Worse of all, some of the layover stops can be WAY out of the way when flying to the Southeast from CA, such as PA for US Airways or NY for Jet Blue. When we flew to Turkey it took like 25 hours and five customs checks. I was younger and more carefree though I still didn't like it. The other thing I hate is flying over water for long periods of time.

Yikes SShhh! Don't let TNG see that! Hawaii is fabulous, and it is worth the trip. Get brave someday, and take drugs! ;D

hey now, no secrets!
mink, you can get to hawaii without airplanes. if you've got lots of $$ you can take the cruise ship.
i used to love flying but it has become more and more of a nuissance. i hate being jammed into a tiny seat for more than an hour or two. last flight i took was to orange co. it was about 1:20. i can handle short flights like that. the crosscountry trips are often a literal pain in the ass.

TNG, I know what you mean, I can do 2 hours tops before I start to feel like I've pushed my limit. When we flew back form Chicago last summer it got to be VERY long (longer coming back) and if I wasn't driving back home I would've ordered a few drinks.

i've been on some long flights to and from overseas (europe, mid-east, japan, etc.) as long as 16 hrs non-stop. it can be a little claustrophobic. especially, on a military transport with no windows.

My cousin thought he found a way to get me there.....I know, it's my loss. JMO, I thought about drinking hard liquor a few years ago but never drugs. I'll look into which ones will knock me out for a few hours.

Mink, I've yet to drink while in the air, I don't want to be impaired, sort of... When we flew to Europe I did get Ativan from my doctor and some people claim it makes them sleepy, not me, in fact I thought it had little effect, but now that I think about it I wasn't so stressed so I guess it did work. My flying anxiety wasn't a big deal then either. Many people take Ativan, or Xanax before getting onto the plane and swear by it. If you do go somewhere ask your doctor for a prescription and try it at home first to see how it effects you. I have not taken anything for local flights (US) I just talk myself into the process and go with it. I may get Ativan again for Chicago however.

I wouldn't like that, but I do close the window screen or look away when flying to fake out my brain (looking out occasionally) thinking: "nope, I'm not in a jet, I'm sitting at home reading a book." Hey, whatever works...
