surefire, I hate the commuter jets (jumper flights). I had to take a small jet from Denver to Pueblo CO and back) years ago, and it was AWFUL! You're in a small aircraft looking down the isle at the pilot's back while bouncing around from all of the turbulence. Want a thrill? Fly over the Rocky Mountains in a small jet! Good thing I was young when I did it...

I appreciate all of you for your encouragement and strategies. Thanks JMO, surefire and TNG.
I have had many people - family and friends that have tried......I'm such a chicken when it comes to planes. If the ocean weren't so big from here to Hawaii, I wouldn't have a problem. At least that was my past. I will give it a try the next opportunity.
JMO, you have a point about the booze. I wouldn't enjoy the ride if I am plastered. I know valium really helped with the dentist (you should see me there, but that is necessary).

Flying is wonderful. It is the landing and take offs that suck. Once I am airborne, I have few worries at altitude. But, more cars crash daily then planes in a month. So, I refuse to miss out on the joys of the world due to my fears.

surefire: Here's a picture of the Convair aircraft I flew in out of Stapleton in the early 70's (I was young) and it was SCARY!: (the 737 wasn't as bad, still...) www.airliners.net/photo/Frontier-Airlines/Convair-580/0000593/L/&tbl=photo_info&photo_nr=1&sok=WHERE__%28_photo_id_%3D_%270000593%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270000478%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270000479%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270000563%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270000588%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270001045%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270001046%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270001711%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270001906%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270001907%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270004190%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270004191%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270004192%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270004193%27_OR_photo_id_%3D_%270017895%27%29_&sort=_order_by_photo_id_=_'0017895',_photo_id_=_'0004193',_photo_id_=_'0004192',_photo_id_=_'0004191',_photo_id_=_'0004190',_photo_id_=_'0001907',_photo_id_=_'0001906',_photo_id_=_'0001711',_photo_id_=_'0001046',_photo_id_=_'0001045',_photo_id_=_'0000588',_photo_id_=_'0000563',_photo_id_=_'0000479',_photo_id_=_'0000478',_photo_id_=_'0000593'_&prev_id=&next_id=0000478 The website is fun to look through, so many different planes/jets.

i remember flying from grand rapids, mi to indy once on US Air shuttle. i checked in at the gate and asked for a window seat. the agent look at me glumly and said, "sir, they're all windows seats."
after taking our seats and at the moment one would expect a stewardess to make announcements, the pilot just twisted around and said, "welcome aboard everyone. if y'all need anything just holler."
got caught up in a sever t-storm on approach to indy. what a rollercoaster that was!

So, I refuse to miss out on the joys of the world due to my fears. I'd decided not to bring up the take off/landing "thing" because I didn't want to scare anyone that may not know about it (not elaborating on purpose). There are fears, and then there are phobias. I agree that there are so many wonderful places to see in this world and to miss out is a huge loss that's why I FORCE myself to do it. Growing up my dad used to fly small planes out of the old Petaluma Airport and would take me on occasion. We'd fly low over grandma's house and tip the wings to say hello. My first flight on a commercial jet I was 10, and flew alone to LA and have been lucky enough to travel many more times since and for years I loved it. For me 9/11, and other life changes age being one (no, I'm not THAT old), have almost immobilized me but because I am a "strong" person I keep going shaking all the while... I've shared this before, but my uncle flew a small plane UNDER the GGB (around 1949/50-ish) he was only 17 years old at the time. Unbelievable by today's standards...I think of him when I drive over the GGB and just imagine what that experience was like.

I did my absolute BEST to ignore that new little tidbit. Since the Hudson crash every time a bird flock is anywhere near a jet, or any small hiccup the media is on it ASAP. I am so sorry for those that died, and I will do my best to stay balanced while flying this summer... ;D
