Though he referred to his work prior to 1970 (or so) as superficial, I always thought of it as his best stuff. Shocking or disturbing comedy never really appealed to me, but it is that for which he will be most remembered. Iconoclasm manifests itself in many ways, and his main body of work reflects his passion for that genre. But check out his earlier observational & character sketches, such as "Al Sleet, your hippie-dippie weatherman" for examples of more inclusive comedy; that which uses familiarity & perspective rather than shock. A fine comic who had greatness thrust upon him & managed not to self-destruct. Ave atque vale.

Glad I went to see him a few months back at the Wells Fargo Center here in Santa Rosa.

I enjoyed his anti-establishment brand of comedy that always carried a grain of truthful insight. It exposed the ridiculousness of our PC society and revealed the absurdity of organized religion. His torch is carried on by comedians like Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, and Jon Stewart.

one of my comedy heros is gone. what an influence he had on my wry sense of humor. i've still got some old albums, class clown, occupation foole, fm and am, a place for my stuff, and a few more. i'm glad i had the chance to see him in 97. the show was actually rescheduled due to the death of his first wife. rest your soul, Georgie! george once said that when he dies he wants to be dropped from a plane so he can just plop in someone's front yard. i wonder if ..... here is a great clip where george and i are totally in agreement: youtube.com/watch?v=7W33HRc1A6cnaturally, it contains a few f-bombs so make sure kids are not nearby.

His torch is carried on by comedians like Bill Maher, Dennis Miller, and Jon Stewart. You know, I loved George, but Bill Maher is no where in his class. Dennis Miller, he is okay I suppose, and Jon Stewart, well, he is more of a Dennis Miller knock off then anything else. At least Dennis Miller and Jon Stewart are funny. Bill Maher is not. Rest in peace George. Thanks for making my early years funny.

LOL. So Dennis Miller is okay because he turned from a liberal Democrat into a hawkish Republican? If anything he has become less funny. That's why his shows are always canceled and he has to settle for making cameos on Bill O'Reilly. The Daily Show is the funniest show on television, mostly because of Jon's insight into current events and politics. And I wouldn't expect you to think Bill Maher is funny but his humor is more like Carlin's than anyone elses.

Dennis Miller, who I have been watching since he started, is okay. And Jon Stewart, he is a Dennis Miller knock off, plain and simple. Dennis Miller started the Comedic News on Saturday Night Live, long before Stewart and Maher. None of them, and I mean none, are even close to good old George Carlin. Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, as it is just comedy, not politics. But personally, I would not give you a plug nickel to see Maher, unless tomatoes and lettuce were given out prior to the show to chuck at him. And I still hope he lands in your front yard.
