Does anyone else feel that Gobernor Swarzenegger is running this state into the ground? We have gone into a lot of debt since his time in office.
I think we need a democrat governor again. I like Newsom. He has done well with San Francisco and I think would do well for the state too.

No, I think more then 30 years of progressive governance, policies and expenditures have run this State into the ground. Schwarzenegger is just trying to do his best, but is finding the politics is not what he expected.
The worst possible course of action is to increase the expenses of government, there for having to increase taxes, which increase expenses on the citizens during an economic downturn. This simple economic theory has been proven correct time and again. Nothing will be different this time. That is exactly why we have over 10% unemployment in this state right now. To many expenses on the citizens, you know, the people who really create the jobs.

Newsom? You have got to be kidding. His only concerns are being able to keep feeding at the public trough to which end he concerns himself with the cause of the week. He has no concept of limits on government. He has shown that he has no respect for the law. He has run SF into the ground.

b]Sunny[/b]... welcome to the forum.
Your "liking" Newsom because Schwarzenegger has "run the state into the ground" is a noble and high minded opinion. However it does not take into account the reality of government in California. Your profile indicating that you are 19 may give reason for the very high level view you take of the situation.
The Democrats already run the state. They have for decades held majorities in both houses of the Legislature and other than the governor himself there is only one Republican holding statewide office, Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. From 2002 to the 2006 election there were exactly zero Republicans in statewide office aside form Schwarzenegger. Prior to that there was one, Secretary of State Bill Jones.
In fact the statewide offices have, for the past couple of decades, with the Governor's office being the notable exception, been a refuge for termed out Democrat legislators. Take for instance our current State Treasurer, Bill Lockyer. He was a member of the Assembly, then he was a State Senator and was term limited out. He then ran for Attorney General and served two four year terms. Termed out of that job, he ran for State Treasurer in 2006 and was elected. He will almost certainly be re-elected in 2010. Once he is termed out of that job, he'll run for something else. He wants to be governor, but I'd bet he'll make a stab at Lt. Governor in 2014 if a Democrat wins the governor's office next year.
Lockyer is one of the most leftist Democrats in Sacramento. He supports everything from raising our taxes to taking away our freedom to own a firearm. He is but one... there are others like him sprinkled all around state government.
How about my recently departed State Senator Carole Migden. A very strident, hard left Democrat, militant lesbian Migden took no prisoners in her rise from the Board of Supervisors in San Francisco to the Assembly and then the State Senate. An unfortunate hit and run while driving her state issued car under the influence of prescription medication and a reputation for abusing her employees, staff and other legislators cost her the Senate seat and now it's occuppied by the even farther left (former SF Supervisor and Assemblymember) Mark Leno.
But Governor Schwarzenegger couldn't let poor old Carole go out to pasture so he appointed her to a $150K per year position on one of California's many boards and commissions... all largely staffed by Democrats.
The Legislature, like the Congress at the federal level, controls the purse strings. The Legislature decides where to spend the money and the Governor can either sign off or veto in total. There is no line item veto power, nor is there an ability for the Governor to add stuff in after the fact. Over the past 50 years the Legislature, again dominated by Democrats and largely dictated to by
Aside from that, Schwarzenegger has hardly governed as a Republican in anything but name. Newsom, and Mayor Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, are nice looking guys with very spotty records as chief executives. San Francisco is broke, laying off employees and having to cut services.... while nearly a dozen "Deputy Mayors" draw $100K+ and full benefits for sometimes questionable jobs. In Los Angeles Tony Villar (which is Mr. Villaraigosa's real name) is headed to insolvency, can't control it's streets and is the gang capital of the world.
Now I am not saying that the Republicans could muster much better at this point. But as a young person, I implore you to do some genuine research and not rely solely on what things might happen to look like. Make your decisions based on fact, not on spin. Whether you fall Democrat or Republican, something else or inbetween, remember that you are the future of the state and the nation.
Don't throw it all away on buzzwords and a pretty face.

Although I'm a Democrat, I did like the way he stood up to then pres. Bush and that he tries to be fair. I agree, we need a Democrat governor again. I like Newsome too but I hear Jerry Brown will run again. I'm okay with both.
