I can see it from a cultural point of view. Face it, the Chinese have NEVER had a free society. After, what, 3500 years? of dictators of various sorts, and a rigid caste system/social structure that was pretty much unbreakable, their customs and habits can't really adapt to western style freedom. Heck, even the socialist state of CA might be too much of a shock to them.

would you make the same argument for folks born into slavery? afterall, that's all they really know. freedom might be too much for them.

Not quite the same thing. Slavery is usually a fairly short lived thing in any single culture. And, while the slave caste is pretty much held down, the slaves are usually aware of, and longing for, the free society around them. When you have a culture that was as locked in and stagnent as the Chinese were for so long, and all the norms, mores, even the religion focused on keeping the same social order, it can be hard for the society to accept the change. The individuals may want change, but the society itself can't allow them to change.

i couldn't disagree with you more.
you're saying that the chinese don't realize that freedom is out there? and don't long for it? or are you saying that the figure since they've been doing thing one way for so long there's no since in changing it now?
i'm sure glad our founding fathers didn't think that way.

The point is not that folks born into subjugation are incapable of self-rule. That was an argument against the Iraq war, as in "they don't know what to do with freedom, so our mission to bring it to them will fail". Au contraire.
Any nation can rise up and take their freedom, but most are not willing to pay the cost. When they are ready, they must have the means and the motivation.
No way to tell if the Red Chinese are ready for freedom, as it is a typical brutal communist dictatorship. Protest; get crushed by tanks.
The US is less safe, the more slave/dictatorships there are. Risking international scorn from our allies is a short term inconvenience, compared to allowing the threats to grow.
If your neighbor makes threatening noises long enough, there is nothing immoral about whacking him upside the head, and letting the chips fall where they may.
This is a world governed by the aggressive use of force. Denying that great truth in word or deed is the action of a fool. A fool about to be subjugated!
