putting santurele's SMART/small car theory to bed.... you may have seen those crash test videos recently on the news. you know, the ones that showed a SMART car getting pummeled by a mid-sized car. if you still want one after that then you may want to apply to the IIHS as a stunt dummy. the SMART car company has since launched a "save face" campaign to convince people that front end crashes are too rare to even be considered (i'd hate to be that 1%). linkey herebut here's another good video that might interest you. the IIHS actually explains that for it's size, the SMART car isn't so bad. pay particular attention to what the guy says around the 1:35 mark. video here

And,as has been pointed out, if you have to make 5 trips in the car that gets 30% better mileage than the car that you can do everything in one trip, are you really helping?

It's time to ween ourselves off our foreign oil dependency problem.
Of course, using our own oil is totally out of the question!

Hey, it might motivate GMC to engineer them to get better gas mileage. It's time to ween ourselves off our foreign oil dependency problem. saunterelle's dream for Amerika

GM is already making cars that people with testoterone want, you dolt! The GMC Yukon Hybrid gets 22 mpg/hwy (same city mpg as a Toyota Camry) and carries 8 passengers plus lots of cargo. The Prius gets 45 mpg, carries only 4 ( uncomfortably) and maybe one small bag of groceries, kills people in collisions, and costs about $25,000 to start. It would take the average driver about 5 years to offset the extra costs with gas savings. It would take 2 and 1/2 Priuses to haul as many people/cargo as ONE Yukon on the same amount of fuel. How much sense does that Prius make now, knucklehead? It's fine that GMC has chosen to put an inferior hybrid engine in the Yukon but if it only boosts highway fuel mileage to 22mpg it doesn't really help. There should be an across the board ban on new recreational vehicles that get less than 35mpg. The Prius is just as safe, if not safer, than a Yukon. Check the crash test ratings yourself: www.motortrend.com/cars/2009/toyota/prius/crash_test_ratings/index.html saunterelle's dream for Amerika

You're right, we should have just let them fail!

You're right, we should have just let them fail! finally, something we can agree on! sorry folks, but what began as a comedy thread has seriously gone off course and now belongs in a different board.

This is what happens when you try to "save" companies that were bound to fail. They were trying to stuff bloated, high-profit SUVs down our throats when they should have been building for the future (hybrids, electrics, and alternative fuel cars). If these companies were allowed to fail, new car companies like Tesla Motors and other would come to the forefront to provide the cars we need. Instead, we have to drag these old, sluggish companies kicking and screaming into the future.

so why does obama keep throwing money at them?
p.s. if companies like tesla could make a practical car at an affordable price perhaps they would be viable. but folks like you don't really care that they are able to stand on their own. you and your kind are content to use my tax money to subsidize losing ventures. how very nice of you.
