I finished reading Sebastian Junger's new book, War. It's not your average embedded-reporter, "then we shot here" book at all. Junger spent 3 months embedded with a platoon of soldiers in the Korengal Valley, one of the deadliest places in Afghanistan. To get an idea of the topo our soldiers were fighting in, have a look at these pics: Junger does a very good job of describing the motivations of the soldiers: they don't care about the politics, just being there for their buddies. He also explores the effects of combat, how it's something that can never be matched in the combat infantryman's life, which is why so many of them re-up to go back for more. Junger has also made a movie out of his experiences, Restrepo, the fire base that was named after a medic who was killed rescuing several wounded soldiers.
