I just finished reading Matterhorn, by Karl Marlantes. This is a powerful novel about a boot second lieutenant in the Marines who gets sent to the I Corps Zone, just south of the DMZ, in Vietnam around 1970. The novel describes the incredible conditions that the Marines lived and fought in, from rain, mud, jungle rot and malaria, to incompetent commanding officers and weather-dependant fire- and air support. The story tells about several operations that Bravo Company was in, including building a base on the top of a mountain (Matterhorn), abandoning the base, then attacking the NVA that took over the base. The novel is 500-plus pages, but reads very well. Sonoma County Library has several copies, but get on the waiting list now.
