I think someone got to Obama before last night's speech and told him that he needed to show more passion. Previously, his oratory style has been marked by pomposity and an arrogance that was evidenced by his habit of looking down his nose at the teleprompter. Last night, though, you could sense more passion and conviction in some of his phrases, like "We just have to..." Who knows how long that mood will last?
