Just in case you missed it, the full speech is available here. As Tim Phillips at Americans for Prosperity says:
Just minutes ago, President Obama delivered what was billed as his "new" vision on the budget. But, watching it I realized his speech was the same old big government path of higher spending, more debt, and massive tax increases. If President Obama wants us to believe he now wants to reduce deficits just 2 months after submitting a budget with red ink as far as the eye can see, then he should propose a new and complete formal budget.
Will Chris "Thrill-Up-My-Leg" Matthews compare and contrast Obama's budget/campaign speech with the budget he submitted to Congress just two months ago? Just exactly when did Obama get the budget cutting religion?
Actually, Obama has always been for responsible spending. The problem has been that he just didn't have enough revenue. So, he proposes to do away with those "unpaid for tax cuts" that have contributed to the deficit. You know, that money that was left in the private sector, rather than being vacuumed up to be spent by government.
In a direct contrast with the other members of his party, Obama said that he does not fault some members of society for being successful. In fact, the President said, "we rightly celebrate their success." HAH! Perhaps he meant celebrate in terms of stripping those eeviiilll rich from their ill-gotten gains, perhaps?
Obama mentioned that, "eventually, the baby boom generation would retire." Again, this conflicts with progressive dogma, which holds that Social Security will be solvent until 2037, so there's no need to do anything about it now. We'll just wait until 2036. Unless, of course, that's an election year.
Obama also mentioned twice that he doesn't need another tax cut. Also, his buddy, Warren Buffett doesn't need another tax cut. And, God knows that Jeff Immelt, CEO of GE, doesn't need another tax cut!
In reconstructing history, Obama repeated the mantra that Clinton balanced the budget and GWB destroyed it. Apparently, Obama missed the lesson where Gingrich and Kasich dragged Clinton, kicking and screaming, to the balanced budget table. No budget that Clinton ever submitted to Congress was ever balanced (I'm fact checking that now).
Obama promised that, if by 2014, we were not on a path to defict reduction, special steps would be triggered. The Vice President would meet with Congress to reach a balanced budget. Perhaps, Mr. Biden will do better than he did a month ago when Obama appointed him as the special negotiator with the Republicans to come up with a plan. Biden met once with Ryan, and then promptly took off for a 2-week vacation. Now, that's special!
It all comes down to this: Do you want to decide where you spend your money, or do you think that government is a better allocator of resources in the economy? Recent history proves that government is not always best.
