Liberals -- oops, I mean "progressives" -- believe that they can pass gun laws that further and further restrict access to firearms, and the result will be a drop in the violent crime rate. Despite a lack of data to support that assumption, they continue to press for laws that, while not directly restricting firearms, make it more difficult to legally buy one, or more difficult to legally buy ammunition, or more difficult to legally use one. Well, the more and more restrictive gun laws in California are starting to have another effect - loss of jobs from law-abiding companies who find it no longer profitable to operate in California.
Auction Arms is a company that runs a website that facilitates auctions between legal sellers and legal buyers. They have categories for all types of firearms - legal, of course - and other items that will interest firearms owners. Many auctions carry the warning, "No Sales To California" to restrict firearms that are not permitted to be sold to individuals by California law. Auction Arms has been doing its best to keep its auctions legal under the ever-increasing burden of firearms laws in our state.
Recently, Auction Arms gave up and issued this press release:
For the past twelve years, AuctionArms.com has operated a successful and dynamic firearms business, despite being located in California, of all places. During this time, we have increasingly become frustrated by a State Government that has continue to assault our Second Amendment rights, infringe on our ability to do business, while zealously and irresponsibly spending its way into financial ruin. Now we see California making the same mistakes it made in the 1970’s-placing the burden of its financial excesses squarely on the backs of small business through increased taxes. Fortunately AuctionArms.com had the business flexibility to not sit idly by and continue to deal with California’s hostile business environment. We had the ability to move. And we did, to the Salt Lake Valley of Utah.
Why did we choose the Salt Lake Valley? The reasons are simple: The politics of Utah are right for us. Utah is one of the most conservative states in the union with a population that loves its guns. It is a CCW state, and Class III weapons do not present the problems they do in other states. The Salt Lake Valley is also one of the best kept secrets in the high-tech industry, with giants like Adobe, Cisco, and Microsoft opening campuses in the area. As a result, there is a major internet nerve center spanning the Salt Lake Valley, connecting the east and west coasts. We will now be sitting square in the middle of that nerve center, taking advantage of the fastest connections available, furthering our goal to make AuctionArms.com the most responsive firearms website in the industry.
Moving forward, we think you are going to like our move. Almost as much as we enjoyed making it.
That's OK, California probably didn't need those jobs anyway, right? I mean, what's another dozen or so jobs when there are already over 2 million unemployed in the state, a rate of 12.1%.
