Senator Evans' Address
Dear Neighbors,
The 2014 legislative session is now in full swing and the bill introduction deadline of February 21st is behind us. In the Sacramento Update section of this newsletter you can find a brief explanation of each bill and links to the legislative information on the bills I will carry this year.
You may also notice a few “high profile” topics like the oil extraction tax and GMO labeling. These aren’t new issues for California. Some of them may put California in a spotlight, but California has always been a leader, not a follower. I’m proud of that legacy.
In other news, I am pleased to announce that I will now be serving as Chair of the Senate Banking and Finance Committee. I co-authored the historic Homeowner Bill of Rights in 2012 during the height of the California Foreclosure Crisis. I view this appointment as a continuation of that effort. In recent years, California’s real-estate market has been ravaged and the dream of homeownership shattered for thousands of hard-working Californians. This position will allow me to continue my oversight of the industry and provide ongoing accountability for Californians.
In my last year in public office you may question why I’ve chosen to take on Big Oil, Big Food and Big Banks. My answer is simple: I believe it’s the right thing to do and I am not afraid to fight the good fight. I was not elected to sit quietly on the sidelines when better ideas for progress exist. Regardless of the outcome, the issues deserve attention and debate and I want to facilitate a progressive debate.
In the coming months I will frequently be talking about these issues. You can follow me on Twitter (@nmevans) and on Facebook (Senator Noreen Evans). On March 25th at 6 p.m., I will also be hosting an electronic town hall regarding my GMO labeling bill. You can watch live via my website (www.s02.sen.ca.gov) and submit questions prior to, and during, the airing. I encourage your participation.
Sincerely,
Senator Noreen Evans
