is a decent, county operated, public shooting range.
Maybe 10 lanes/stations for handgun, with target stands at 7, 10, 25, and 50 yards.
And 20 lanes/stations for rifle with stands at 25, 50, 100, 200, 300, and 500 yards. Cast benches, some sort of shed roof.
Throw in a few stations for trap shooting.
I'm sure that the county could find some retired military or LEOs who would be quite happy to act as range masters for little or no pay to keep things under control.
This would do several things. It would cover those of us who enjoy shooting sports under the equal protection clause - we have ball fields, tennis courts, etc, etc, etc. out the yin-yang, but we don't have one public range. We deserve to have our sport of choice supported the same way other sports are.
Next, it would improve firearm safety. By providing a safe place to practice people would be encouraged to do that, and to teach their children how to safely handle firearms.
I have very fond memories of being at the range with my family, learning the mechanics of of shooting and the more important lessons of self control, self discipline, courtesy, respect for others, and consequences of actions.
My brothers and I, and all our friends, never had any trouble telling a real firearm from out cap guns and BB guns. We never were tempted to use them for criminal activity. We, especially my brothers who were all older, did occasionally take them to school. For report presentations, to do some work on them in shop, or because we were going shooting after school. I don't remember anyone who didn't have at least one gun, often kept loaded and in a closet. Or on a wall rack with the ammo in a drawer underneath it.
Nah, it will never happen. The "progressive" capons who run this county would never go for something that would actually increase firearm safety. They like it when they can dip their fingers in the blood of victims, paint their faces with it, and then cackle about how they need to 'do something' about firearms - meaning try to figure out more ways to take them from honest, law abiding citizens while letting the thugs and the State (and State sponsored thugs) keep theirs.
