Please, let's keep this thread civil. I believe this is the latest AWB bill on the back burner that IIRC Subdjoe referred to. thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c110:H.R.6257:From what I've now been told, Appendix A are "excempt" from the ban.

Seveal years ago I was sent, quite by mistake, by the Divine Ms. Dis office a copy of the draft of it. That appx. of exemptions was not a part of it. Unfortunately I no longer have my copy of that draft, hard drive crashes don't you know. but, since they can add on to it, expect that they will get around to moving a lot of things from the exempt list to the ban list.

There they go again..... So, the law, as currently written, bans semiauto "assault weapons" except for: - any firearm, or replica or duplicate, as listed in Appx. A which was lawfully possessed on the date the law is enacted.
- anything listed in Appx. A.
- bolt, lever, or slide action rifles.
Maybe someone should explain the difference between an auto loader and a bolt, lever or slide action.
- a semiauto rifle with a clip of 5 or less rounds.
- an antique firearm.
The ruger Mini-14 is listed in Appx. A as being exempt, but the Garand and M1 Carbine are not. The M1A (M14) is not listed either. I didn't find a definition in the bill for "antique firearm" but I'm willing to bet that my rifles are not exempt. Now, my rifles were "lawfully possessed" prior to the enactment of the law, but this will blow a big hole in CMP's sales of Garands and Carbines. To what end? When was the last time you heard of a drive-by shooting where the killers used a Garand? When was the last time you heard of a home invasion where the perps were armed with M14s? Granted, ARs and AKs show up every once in a while, but the majority of firearms used in crimes are either pistols or shotguns. I guess those two are next! I was planning on buying a S&W revolver next year. It looks like I'll have to move those plans up a bit.

FWIW.... HR 6257 is effectively dead for this year. The Congress is in recess, I don't see the Congress coming back into session between now and January 5th when a new Congress will begin. It was assigned to commitee and never came out. Once the new Congress opens, any and all bills from the past Congress that were not passed out are gone.
Will it be re-introduced next year? Almost certainly. I do note, with some glee, that one of the bills co-sponsors; the erstewhile Republican Chris Shays of CT lost his seat last night in the Obamapalooza.
Also note that in Section 5 of the act there is a 10 year sunset. This is a dead bang copy of the original Clinton AWB. The bill presented by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy last year was a permanent ban.
Also.... for what it's worth, I do not believe that there are enough votes in the Congress, even post January 5, to bring this kind of a bill to the floor. Not post Heller. Remember that Bush dared the Congress to re-up the Clinton ban by saying he would sign it, and they couldn't get it done. A significant chunk of the D votes in the House are pro-gun. These are folks who come from districts and states that aren't like California or New York. They would be committing political suicide if they voted out a comprehensive ban.
The antis also have to understand that, post Heller that any outright ban they try to toss out there is going to run the risk of comprehensive incorporation of Amendment Two... which is their greatest fear.
They're going to tax the snot out of our guns and ammo first. They need / want the money and they can justify it in the press as something akin to a sin tax. Unfortunately the "sin" they are mucking with is an enumerated right in the constitution. Any path they take could be deadly for their arguments and hence their agenda.

I've been buying 30-06 and 223 in bulk. Looks like I should lay in a supply of 45 and 357 while I'm at it.

I urge everyone that is pro 2A to donate time and money to the NRA and GOA... they're going to need every bit they can get to prevent horse manure legislation such as .XX$ per round taxes
