I couldn't believe my ears when I heard it on the news.....I can see where it could be a safety issue, not just for the blind, but also for the hard of hearing Folk as well. Trial and error, I suppose

By the way, the muffler comment was in sarcasm. IIRC, hybrids only use the electric motor at low speeds, and the gas kicks in at a certain speed?
Perhaps they should equip the hybrids with the monotonous ice cream truck music blaring so that the public knows they are coming
(more sarcasm intended)

I knew it was sarcasm surefire...lol What scares me is, after all these cars have been sold, they have backtracked now .....yikes, we may have a problem. Until there is a solution, what are the current owners supposed to do...hhmmm Options: A) muffler removal B) monotonous ice cream truck, blaring music C) be on the lookout for white canes and hearing aids D) honk at every crosswalk E) keep it in the garage pending solution F) pray for the best G) ?

Yet another example of the Law of Unintended Consequences taking a bite out of the backside.

I had to chide SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed) as she first noticed the quiet car on her walks. She did not come up with Car-Tones. Someone in Santa Clara started a biz where one can download up to 20 different car tones for their Prius! Dang, another million down the drain!

Good point Big Dob regarding the CFL's, but not sure how it fits in this thread, although relative. Are you saying these cars are just as hazardous to tour environment as well? If so, we need to speak, no?

How does it fit in? Another example of the libs "doing something" about a problem before actually thinking about it and trying to find out the best solution, and ignoring the Law of Uninteded Consequences. In theory, if you break ANY fluorsecent lamp in a public building (store, classroom, etc) it needs to be evacuated and a HAZMAT team called for the cleanup. And, it is illegal to throw a CFL into the trash, you need to take them to recycle centers. If you break one in the house, open your windows and ventilate it well, put on your tyvec overalls and dust mask. Carefully sweep up all the fragments. Put them in a plastic bag to contain the mercury. Bag the broom and dust pan too. Make arragenments for disposal. Oh, and CFLs are not worth a damn in fixtures with dimmers, three way switches, or the motion sensor light fixtures. if you need light right away, you still need incandescent lamps. Oh, and be sure to buy commercial grade lamps - the residential grade lamps that are so cheap in the stores are tested on a 3 hour cycle. That means they are desinged to burn for three hours at a stretch. More that that and they MIGHT overheat and shut down. Commercial grade are made for a 12 hour burn. LEDs are an up and coming thing, but there is a big problem with waste heat from them. Until that is solved, they are not the best bet for home use.
Electric cars have been hashed over in other threads, but a quick recap here is in line I guess.
1) Where is all the power supposed to come from? If there were to be a significant increase in the use of them, we would outpace our ability to power them.
2) What do we do when all those batteries fail? How do we dispose of them?
3) Electrics and hybrids take a lot more in the way of materials and manufacturing steps to produce than internal combustion. What about the wastes produced from the extra mining and manufacturing processes?

Subdjoe: "Another example of the libs "doing something" about a problem before actually thinking about it and trying to find out the best solution, and ignoring the Law of Uninteded Consequences."
Please, let's not go there......especially after the unilateral war on Iraq, ok?
Back on topic, thanks subdjoe for your knowledge of hazardous materials. If this is common knowledge, what does the public do? Myself, I still have one of those gas powered vehicles, but for those who have a Prius or equivalent, thinking about getting one, how does the govt. help? Shouldn't they insist upon getting more research done before allowing the product on the market?
And why stop there? What about the medications that were supposed to help alleviate or aid with health issues? Wouldn't that fit into this as well?
