liberals are always concerned with how we look to others. this is not a popularity contest. prez bush remained focused on his job -to keep the citizens of this great nation safe. he was never worried about what france or spain thought of us. I think we can look forward to this upcoming administration bending over backwards to kiss European anus. That brown substance on their noses will not be dirt.

What is utterly ironic is that Bush has been, on balance, the most Wilsonian president since LBJ. And yet the progressive left hates him with a fervor and a passion rarely seen in American politics.
Perhaps thats why it's called "Bush Derangement Syndrome".

Wow you're dense. Did you not pay attention during Katrina? Bush put an incompetent horse trainer (Brown) in charge of FEMA. His appointment lead to the deaths of many citizens of New Orleans. I am happy to dig up articles if you'd like to learn more about it. wow, you're dumber than a stump. did you not pay any attention to anything other than political hacks during katrina? the finger of blame rests squarely on nagin, blanco, and others. a god damned hurricane killed people in new orleans (also some of the wonderful citizens of N.O. killed others). flood waters killed people there. the failure of the mayor to act and react properly killed people there. the failure of the governor to understand the nature of the problem killed people. the FEMA response DID NOT kill people. my brethren who swooped in (after the failure of local and state gov'ts) DID NOT kill people. they saved COUNTLESS lives. do a little research and get the real picture. you will hate the next 4 years because every damn thing that happens i will blame obama. i don't care if it is a tsunami in thailand, a snowstorm in nebraska, or a drip in my kitchen sink. it will all be obama's fault. btw...... when you come up with the balls to tell us of your adventures beyond the bay area (la la land) i may have a bit more respect for your national and world views. until then you shall remain idiot-in-chief who doesn't know jack shit about what goes on beyond the bay. Obviously you need a refresher. See here: dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2005/09/07/fema/index.html "During the 1990s, FEMA was routinely praised as one of the best-functioning federal agencies. Its response to the Midwestern floods of 1993, the Northridge earthquake of 1994, and 1995's Oklahoma City terrorist attack are considered models of emergency response. By contrast, its performance during Katrina is almost universally acknowledged to have been abysmally poor. At first, FEMA's post-Katrina failure appears baffling: What happened to the once-great FEMA? But George Haddow, who served as the deputy chief of staff at FEMA under James Lee Witt, Bill Clinton's FEMA director, thinks that FEMA's current flaws are all too understandable -- and are a direct consequence of the Bush administration's decision to pull the federal government out of the natural disaster-relief business and turn over more power to state and local officials."

Saunterelle, your cite from Salon does not support your contention that Bush's appointment of Brown, admittedly a poor administrator, led to the deaths of "many citizens of New Orleans." Those of us who were paying attention at the time remember how Mayor Ray Nagin refused to implement the emergency plan that the City already had to deal with a major storm and flood. Do you recall seeing the photograph of lines and lines of school busses standing in a flooded storage yard? Mayor Nagin's emergency plan called for using all available public transportation, including those busses, to evacuate the city in the event of a major storm and flood. Why didn't Mayor Nagin implement his plan? Do you also remember Gov. Kathleen Blanco refusing Bush's offers of help from the National Guard? The Governor was afraid of losing her sovereignty so she turned down the initial offer of federal aid. Why didn't Gov. Blanco allow the National Guard in during the early stages of the catastrophe? Saunterelle, like many others of the Rabid Left, you want to claim that FEMA should have been responsible for all emergency help, when, in fact, FEMA is not set up for that. FEMA's main task is to come in after the emergency has been settled and help people get back on their feet. If this is not the case, please explain to me how people in the Russian River area are able to survive a flood without any immediate federal assistance. I'd smite you for your post, but I see that you're already in deep negative territory.

Those on the Right like to talk about how it should be left to local government to deal with a disaster of epic proportions. The truth is, these calamities are better handled by an organization like FEMA. FEMA's response to the Midwestern floods of 1993, the Northridge earthquake of 1994, and 1995's Oklahoma City terrorist attack are considered models of emergency response. Bush put an incompetent crony in charge of FEMA, as a result many people died. End of story.

TNG: He was selected via two, back to back rigged elections botched by the infamous Rove.......remember Fl. & OH??? It is on the news nearly everyday that he is the worst president. I think he likes it! Give me a break. They were rigged elections alright, which is why Gore couldn't believe that Bush won, they were not rigged in Bush's favor. Hence the early and incorrect announcements in Florida. Stop bringing that tired old lie out here.

Seven years of keeping us safe at home. For that alone, he deserves our undying gratitude. Algore would have surrendered on Day 3. Seriously, that's how you measure a President? By how many times we've been attacked on American soil? You're a hell of an easy grader. The Presidents primary job is commander and chief of the military. Your damn right that is a primary measure. One the previous administration failed at miserably. I would not put much faith in the incoming administration either.

You honestly believe that Bush's war on Iraq is the reason we haven't been attacked? Obviously the terrorists don't need to attack us again, 9/11 was enough to throw us off our axis. Bush's reaction has spurred a failed war and the downfall of our economy. For Christ sake, the Bush Administration couldn't even help our own citizens when they were in need after hurricane Katrina hit. Many died due to their incompetence. Would that be the failed war we won in Iraq? Or is it the continuing war in Afghanistan? Funny how FEMA gets the blame for all past screw-ups in natural disasters, and rightly so, but in this Administration the blame goes to Bush.

Bush put an incompetent crony in charge of FEMA, as a result many people died. End of story. You are advancing a lie. Regardless of Mike Brown's competency as agency head, remembering that the front line, permanent bureacracy doesn't change from one administration to the next, your statement as quoted is factually incorrect. That you continue to repeat that factually incorrect statement, when there is clear evidence to the contrary makes you a liar. People, as was clearly demonstrated above and elsewhere, did not die in and around NOLA as a result of FEMA trying to fulfill it's mission and charter, which was to provide aid and support after the fact. You are ascribing blame on FEMA for actions that were not and are not in the agency's charter. But then when one is as thoroughly taken over by Bush Derangement Syndrome as saunterelle and others of the progressive left around SoCo, I suppose it is much easier to believe in and spread lies than it is to try and understand the truth. And that is the end of the story.

The most interesting point about the federal response to Hurricane Katrina comes when one considers that the hurricane did not hit just New Orleans. Areas of Mississippi east of New Orleans were hit even harder, with wide-spread destruction and displacement. The difference was that the governor of Mississippi, Republican Haley Barbour, didn't hesistate to hit the alarm button, and people were evacuated before the storm hit.
Similarly, with the couple of hurricanes that have hit the area since Katrina, we have all been treated to news coverage of the traffic jams out of the area before the storms hit, and the orderly recovery after the storms abated.
Only New Orleans suffered the way it did. Specifically, only the Ninth Ward of New Orleans suffered the way it did.
I still remember a news clip of the Superdome after it was learned that the refugee population was overwhelming the resources the city had stockpiled there. A black man screamed at the camera, "Look at the mess in there! You gotta get down here and help us!" I thought, "Here is a man that has probably lived on government assistance his whole life. Now that a catastrophe has struck and his government did not bail him out, he doesn't know what to do."
